In the DC, Maryland, and Virginia market, the range runs from classic 3×6 subway tile at $8 a square foot installed to book-matched quartzite slab that costs more per square foot than the countertop. Here's how to navigate the decision without overspending or undershooting.
The Material Spectrum: Subway Tile to Stone Slab
Backsplash materials fall into roughly four tiers:
- Ceramic and porcelain subway tile: The classic 3×6 brick pattern remains the most popular backsplash choice in the DMV — for good reason. It's durable, easy to clean, and timeless enough that it won't feel dated in ten years. The design lever here is grout color: white tile with white grout reads as clean and simple; white tile with charcoal or dark gray grout adds contrast and makes the pattern pop. Installed cost: $10–$18 per sq ft.
- Ceramic and porcelain field tile (non-subway formats): 4×12 or 2×8 elongated subway tile in a stacked vertical pattern, large-format 12×24 tile, or hexagon mosaic — all use the same materials as subway tile but with more varied visual results. Similar price range. Larger format means fewer grout lines and a more contemporary look.
- Natural stone mosaic and slab: Marble, travertine, and slate mosaics (typically 1×1 or 2×2 mounted on mesh) bring natural variation that ceramic can't match. They require sealing and periodic maintenance, and are more susceptible to staining near the range. Slab backsplash — running the same stone as the countertop up the wall — is a high-end option that creates seamless continuity. Installed cost: $20–$60+ per sq ft for mosaic; slab pricing varies widely by stone.
- Glass tile and specialty materials: Handmade ceramic, zellige (Moroccan clay tile), mirrored glass, and unlacquered brass tile are design-forward choices that photograph beautifully but require more careful installation and maintenance. These appear most often in high-end kitchen renovations in Georgetown, McLean, and Chevy Chase.
Pattern, Layout, and the Grout Decision
Installation pattern affects cost as much as material selection. A standard running bond (offset by half) is the simplest and least expensive. Herringbone and chevron patterns use the same tile but require more cuts and more installer time — typically adding $3–$6 per sq ft to labor cost. Vertical stacked patterns are trendy but require precise layout to avoid the 'out of plumb' look that results from imperfect wall surfaces.
Grout joint width changes the visual character significantly. A tight 1/16-inch joint with rectified tile reads as modern and seamless. A wider 1/8-inch joint is standard for most ceramic and porcelain and easier to install. Unsanded grout for tight joints; sanded grout for wider joints and natural stone.
Full Height vs. Standard Backsplash
The choice to tile from countertop to underside of upper cabinets (standard, roughly 18 inches) versus floor-to-ceiling behind open shelving or a range hood is mostly a design decision, but the ceiling-height option requires more material and more careful coordination with cabinet installation sequencing. Full-height tile behind a range hood — especially in a contrasting material or pattern — is one of the most striking focal points a kitchen can have.

A standard kitchen backsplash covers 30–60 sq ft depending on window placement and cabinet layout. Typical all-in costs:
- Ceramic/porcelain tile, standard pattern: $500–$1,400
